Does This Sound Like Mild Social Phobia?
It sounds like you're basically a bit of shy person who doesn't feel comfortable being the center of attention. That puts you in some pretty good company because about 45% of the population considers themselves to be "shy." And Public Speaking is the #1 fear in America - true story. Typically, people who report feeling like you do are dealing more with self-image management issues than a true social phobia. They worry they are not being perceived accurately by others (mostly strangers - they usually feel fine around their friends.) Learning to ignore or gently shove aside our critical inner voice is not easy, but you can do it. That's the most important part of this whole equation. The other part is that you have to actually put yourself in exactly these kind of scary situations so that you can learn to conquer your fear. It's hard, but it's the only way. It's do-able tho, and lots of people motor on, feeling like s**t at first, but then gradually gaining more confidence. The list of performers who suffer from stage fright is enormous. Even Jon Stewart admitted he was terrified to give his closing speech on the Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear. Trust me, you're not alone. The thing is, you really can fake it till you make it. No one can read your thought bubbles - thank god. Just try to avoid the catastrophic thinking - that's key. Once you can learn to ignore your inner critic, things will get a LOT easier. You can do it. Best wishes and good luck!
