What should I major in college?

One of the life science would be the best fit for you (biology, biochemistry, etc). You want to be a scientist/researcher, so graduate school is pretty much a requirement to make it anywhere in the field. You can research those diseases anywhere; it doesn't have to be at a medical school (my college doesn't have a medical school, yet there are quite a few people here that do HIV research).
