Buying a carbon frame with no warranty?

The frame is a 2008 Fuji Toyota Team United Carbon frame set 54cm and its brand new off ebay. I think it will sell for about $1300. I'm nervous because I hear carbon frames crack and you have to throw them away. This is a high end frame and is of good quality, what causes the carbon to crack. A pothole? kerb?
