Why did Latter Day Saints teach that Blacks were dark skinned because of their sins?

Maybe they finally read Numbers 12:10, Genesis Chapter 9:24-7 and then Genesis 10. God did not Curse all dark skinned people as many denominations have taught. It was Canaan. Those were the Canaanites, Philistines, Phoenicians, but even they served a purpose in history.
